I. The Decision That Needed Explanation

Step 4: Decision logic

IV. The Architecture of Explainability

Explainability cannot be retrofitted onto black-box AI. It must be architected from foundation.

Two fundamentally different approaches:

How it works:

  • Black-box AI makes decision
  • Separate system attempts to explain after the fact
  • Uses approximation methods (LIME, SHAP, attention weights)
  • Generates explanation that seems to justify decision

V. A Moment of Reflection

When Sara received that detailed explanation of why her credit was declined, her first emotion wasn't gratitude—it was fear.

The bank knew too much.

They observed her client concentration. They tracked Central Medical's payment patterns—not just to Sara, but to other suppliers. They analyzed public filings. They connected disparate signals into a coherent risk assessment.

And they were right. Central Medical did fail. The bank's reasoning was sound.

But that accuracy made the transparency more unsettling, not less.
